"I am running out of space on my boot volume and want to move my iTunes Library to an external drive".
To understand how to manage your Music Library, I believe it is necessary to have an understanding of the iTunes Music Library and "What is Stored Where".
Your iTunes Music Library is in two main pieces:
- The music files: This part is easy to understand. These are the MP3 and AAC files -- and now the video files as well -- that take up all that precious storage space.
- The meta-data: This is the more mysterious part. Here is a Tech Note that describes some of it: What are the iTunes library files?
Simply put, it is a database file named iTunes Music Library.xml and it contains information about playlists, play count, track ratings and other stuff I will explain in detail below
